IBM's Possible Future iSeries and OS/400 Announcements
by Timothy Prickett Morgan

OS/400 V5R2 is now available, and the talk in the midrange has now predictably turned to what IBM will do next. While the hardware and software engineers continue to plug away on the future Armada Power5 servers and their Power6 kickers, due over the next few years in various eServer product lines, what IBM actually does in the iSeries line has more to do with what customers and partners want than with what technology it can deliver to the marketplace. iSeries Model 890 Tops Web Serving Benchmark
by Timothy Prickett Morgan

The people who run the iSeries business, who have been positioning the OS/400 server as a respectable platform for e-business since the advent of the AS/400e, in 1997, have announced that an iSeries Model 890 server, with only half of its full complement of 32 processors cranking through Web transactions, is the top-ranking machine on the SPECWeb99-SSL benchmark test. Being tops on that test is interesting, mostly because it sheds some light on the effect of SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) encryption on throughput. READ MORE >

Who Is Top Gun for Servers? Depends Who You Ask
by Timothy Prickett Morgan

The latest revenue rankings for the top server vendors are out from IDC and Gartner. As is always the case, the two market research firms do not exactly agree on their market share estimates. But one thing they do agree on: For the first time in the history of the IT industry, a vendor--namely, Hewlett-Packard--has tied with IBM for the top sales spot in the market. READ MORE >

Admin Alert: Produce Pleasing PC5250 Pictures for Pupils and Printers
by Joe Hertvik

Microsoft's Word has the right idea. Out of the box, Word's default document colors are black text on a white background, just like the printed page. PC5250, on the other hand, features the same "dynamic" green text on a black background interface that's remained unchanged since before the days of the first Bush presidency. But green on black doesn't cut it for today's users, so a handy technique for changing PC5250's screen colors is invaluable. READ MORE >
