Shakeup Among Top iSeries Marketing and Sales Execs
by Timothy Prickett Morgan
At press time last week, we caught wind of some big changes in the IBM marketing and sales organizations related to the iSeries product line. The word on the street says Kim Stevenson, vice president of iSeries marketing operations, put in her last day of work on the job on Friday. We had also heard that John Guido, head of iSeries Sales in the Americas region, has left that job. Sources at IBM confirmed that these changes have indeed taken place. READ MORE >

TFH Readers Speak Out on Open Source OS/400
by Timothy Prickett Morgan
Feelings about the creation of an open source version of OS/400 run strong, at least if the letters we have received from readers of The Four Hundred are any measure. Many readers were either for or against the so-called Open Source/400. After reading my article "Open Source OS/400: A Crazy Idea for Crazy Times," some readers were hopeful that it might inject a little extra pizzazz into the platform. Here are some of those letters. NEC Shows 32-Way Windows Server with iSeries-Class Oomph
by Timothy Prickett Morgan
At last week's Intel Developer Forum, Japanese server maker NEC took the wraps off a 32-way server running Microsoft's forthcoming "Whistler" Windows .NET Server 2003 version of Datacenter Server, based on the "McKinley" Itanium 2 processor. The results of the TPC-C online transaction processing benchmark put the Wintel platform in the same power class as the enterprise Unix and proprietary platforms (like OS/400) that have been ahead of Windows since Windows NT 3.1 debuted, in 1993. Massoglia's Views on COMMON, IBM and the iSeries
by Dan Burger
Charlie Massoglia is about to finish his second term as president of COMMON, a job that puts him in position to work closely with IBM and with the legion of OS/400 advocates. You might think the job would wear out a guy, but Massoglia seems energized by it. His ebullient demeanor is there, despite a sometimes-critical view of IBM by many of the COMMON faithful, who have been known to tell IBM exactly how they feel about how it treats the OS/400 platform. IBM Debuts New Ultrium Tapes with Lower TCO
by Timothy Prickett Morgan
IBM has announced a new series of Ultrium tape subsystems and autoloaders for midrange shops. The Ultrium tape format was jointly developed by IBM, Hewlett-Packard, and Seagate Technology, and is based on the Linear Tape-Open that bears some resemblance to the Magstar technology developed by IBM, yet is incompatible with that Magstar format. The new IBM Ultrium drives can be attached to OS/400, Unix, Linux, Windows, and mainframe servers. READ MORE >

Shaking IT Up: The Proper Perspective
by Kevin Vandever
As I write this month's column, I find it difficult to discuss the trivialities of my IT existence. I don't care if you decide to learn ILE or object-oriented design, or if you'd rather go back to RPG II on the IBM System/36. It doesn't matter to me if you follow a proper software development life cycle or slam applications into production right after you've compiled them. Your project plans, budgets, and status meetings--none of that concerns me today. READ MORE >
