Project Prometheus Unchained as iSociety
by Timothy Prickett Morgan

Finally, after months of secrecy--or something closely approximating it--the Prometheus Project, which seeks to build a grassroots community to promote the System i server platform, will be unveiled--perhaps unchained is a better metaphor?--by COMMON, the OS/400 and i5/OS user group, at its semi-annual meeting in Miami Beach, Florida, during the opening session of the event. The first phase of Prometheus will be a System i community called iSociety. READ MORE >

IBM Offers Incentives on i5 iSCSI Links to BladeCenter Blade Boxes
by Timothy Prickett Morgan

Back in May, IBM launched the native iSCSI hardware and software support in the System i5 line, which is being touted primarily as a means of creating hybrid server and application setups that match i5/OS applications running on the i5 servers to Windows applications running on System x servers. The idea behind IBM's iSCSI support on the i5 is a sound one, technically, but apparently there are some economic and marketing issues. READ MORE >

The Disk Drive at 50: Still Spinning
by Timothy Prickett Morgan

This month marks the 50th anniversary of the announcement of an innovative storage technology that IBM created and launched for its early computers--a device that predates its vaunted System/360 mainframe by eight and a half years. Back in September 1956, it was just called the IBM 305 RAMAC, and it wasn't a disk drive so much as computing system attached to a giant disk drive. That device, the great-great-granddaddy of the spinning disk in your computer and those in use at your company, is arguably one of the most persistent pieces of technology ever created. READ MORE >

As I See It: The Incredible Shrinking Vacation
by Victor Rozek

For the first time in more than three decades, I went to Yosemite this summer. (An experience, incidentally, I recommend avoiding like a rabid dog because it has been stripped of most of its wilderness value.
