OpenPowers Prove IBM Can Do Puppy i5s
by Timothy Prickett Morgan

If you like IBM's Power5 hardware, which has about as much horsepower under the skins as any server out there, and you like Linux, you are probably going to like the new line of Linux-only servers from IBM, called the eServer OpenPower machines. And if you like the OS/400 platform, like I do, you will probably be wondering why IBM can't give such a great deal as it has with the OpenPowers on puppy OS/400 servers. READ MORE >

eServer i5 Solution Editions Hit the Streets
by Timothy Prickett Morgan

When IBM launched the eServer i5 Model 550 midrange server and revamped its pricing across the eServer i5 line, in August, it also debuted a discounted version of the Model 550 called the Solution Edition. The first of these i5 machines, which give buyers decent discounts if they are using them to run popular third-party OS/400 application software, are now hitting the street. New TPC Benchmarks Are on the Horizon
by Timothy Prickett Morgan

Gauging the performance and price/performance of servers using industry-developed, yet open, benchmarks is such an accepted part of the server comparison and acquisition process that many of us take such open benchmarks for granted. There is a cat and mouse game going on between server makers and benchmark administrators, the former always trying to stretch the limits and the latter trying to rein in vendors, while adapting to changes in technology. Mad Dog 21/21: Sell Phones
by Hesh Wiener

Sometimes deception works, sometimes not. The Viceroy butterfly improves the odds of its survival by imitating the Monarch; predators don't like the taste of the Monarch and avoid the tastier Viceroy. But even old Aesop pointed out that a subterfuge might not always work as expected. The wolf in a sheepskin infiltrated the flock, but when the farmer sought a sheep for the dinner table, he seized and slaughtered the disguised wolf. Correction

The article "PeopleSoft Says It's Working Hard to Make a Better World" has been corrected since it was first published. Connect is PeopleSoft's conference, not Quest's, as originally stated. And the conference is being held this week, not next month, as originally stated. Midrange Server regrets the errors. [Changes made 9/15/04.]
