It's Time for an iSeries BladeCenter
by Timothy Prickett Morgan
I spent a day last week up at Somers, New York, where most of IBM's marketing plans are hatched. Somers, which has four buildings with glass pyramids on top, designed by IM Pei, is also where the top brass of the Systems Group get together to create the products that IBM will make and to hatch the plans to sell them. If you were going to do a hostile takeover of IBM, this, not Armonk, is where you would start. READ MORE >

Has IBM Raised iSeries Model 800 Prices?
by Timothy Prickett Morgan
If you get IBM's announcement letters, you might have thought that Big Blue raised prices on entry iSeries Model 800 servers on September 5. It sure looked that way when I saw the announcement. But apparently the $4,000 price hike on two entry iSeries models is the result of a misunderstanding. READ MORE >

Gartner Ranks Worldwide, U.S. Server Sales for Q2
by Timothy Prickett Morgan
IDC recently gave IBM the leadership position in revenue market share for the second quarter of 2003, and analysts at rival Gartner seconded that top ranking last week, putting Big Blue at the top of the heap, too, for the quarter. According to Gartner's estimates, IBM's lead over rival Hewlett-Packard was smaller in the United States than in the overall worldwide market, across all server platforms. READ MORE >

Admin Alert: The Ins and Outs of iSeries Time Synchronization
by Joe Hertvik
Setting time on an iSeries box is easy, but there are a few pitfalls to OS/400 time synchronization in three specific situations: when your box is communicating with other servers, when it's running the Management Central server, and when it's running native Java programs. In these scenarios, you need to know the drill for setting up time synchronization. I'll walk you through an example of OS/400 time synchronization breaking down, and will then explain how to set things properly. READ MORE >

Mad Dog 21/21: Gravity's Drain Bowl
by Hesh Wiener
"Niagara Falls . . . slowly I turned . . . step by step. . . ." The speaker is a homicidal maniac, about to grab Lou Costello and wring his neck. The setting is a jailhouse. How the lunatic, Costello, and Abbott got there is irrelevant. But every time Costello says "Niagara Falls," he sets off the madman, who relives the crime of passion he once committed there. A similar scene involving power transmission apparatus occurred on August 14, and 50 million people had their electricity choked off. READ MORE >
