IBM Is Looking for Some Help on the V6R1 Rollout

Intrepid readers of The Four Hundred fired off a series of emails to me last Monday, letting me know that IBM had just posted the details on a new Redpaper Residency program in Rochester, Minnesota. If you want to get the inside scoop on the upcoming announcements and you don't mind helping put together the documentation for the announcements, then Big Blue Wants You!

You can see all the details about the residency program here. IBM is only requiring that the techies who join the residency have average System i skills; you don't have to work in the labs to do this stuff, and in many cases, because IBM is trying to communicate with the average i5/OS shop anyway, it makes sense for IBM to spend a lot of time explaining the new hardware and software technologies and then rely on average Joe Programmer or Joan Programmer to help explain it to their peers. (Remember, you are getting this information every week from an English major with a technical writing background and a few years of engineering school. The method sort-of works. HA!)

You have to submit your application to Jim Cook at IBM by October 1 at jimcook@us.ibm.com. The residency starts on November 5 and ends on November 30. Presumably there is a break for Thanksgiving and some football. IBM picks up the tab for living expenses and travel, but not for the time away from work.

One last thing--the residency says announcements for V6R1 are scheduled for the first quarter, which jibes with what I have been hearing on the street. I have heard January or February and sometimes March as possible announcement times for V6R1 and possibly a more complete line of Power6-based servers.
