OS/400 Shops in Limbo During Oracle-PeopleSoft Fight

PeopleSoft held its annual Connect user conference in San Francisco last week, and Craig Conway, the company's chairman and CEO, used his keynote address to fire up the 15,000 attendees and get them behind his company as it continues to fight the hostile takeover from rival Oracle. During the show, PeopleSoft announced a five-year, $1 billion partnership with IBM, which is clearly aimed at making PeopleSoft less attractive to Oracle and better able to fend off the company's advances. JBoss 4.0 Gets J2EE Support, Takes on IBM, BEA, and Others

JBoss has turned up the heat in the middleware market now that it has delivered JBoss Application Server 4.0, the first open source application server to be certified as a J2EE 1.4 application server. The software, being released under the Lesser General Public License and as a commercial product through JBoss, is the result of three years of development, and it is sure to upset some of the marketing plans of commercial J2EE application server makers IBM, BEA Systems, Oracle, Microsoft, and Sun Microsystems.
