IBM Focuses on TCO, Ease of Use with Domino 6
by Dan Burger

IBM will this week take the wraps off Domino 6, the next generation of its Notes/Domino messaging, groupware, and application serving middleware. While people will make a lot of noise that IBM is taking the first steps toward merging the Domino programs with its WebSphere middleware and its DB2 databases with Domino 6, the new program is more than that. Domino 6 has a lot of tweaks that customers want, and is a platform that is easier to administer than prior Domino releases. READ MORE >

Green Streak Capacity Planning Guide
by Timothy Prickett Morgan

While some of the price breaks of IBM's "Green Streak" promotion are not as sweet in the fourth quarter as they were in the third, the deep hardware discounts and other cuts are still in effect. If you have a vintage machine and you can squeeze your workloads onto the Model 270 or Model 820 machines on which IBM is offering its Green Streak deal, you've still got time to buy. We've built a Green Streak capacity planning guide to make the shopping a little easier for you. READ MORE >

BladeCenters Can Be IBM's Fifth Kind of eServer
by Timothy Prickett Morgan

With yesterday's announcement of its "Xcalibur" BladeCenter blade servers, IBM introduced what could evolve into a new family of products under the eServer umbrella. The eServer line includes xSeries Intel-based servers; pSeries Unix and iSeries OS/400 RISC-based servers; and zSeries mainframes. These machines all have unique architectures; so can the BladeCenters. This is why the BladeCenters are being branded distinctly from the other eServer brands and not just thrown into the xSeries category, even though the initial models use Intel iron. READ MORE >

Admin Alert: Dealing with Inactive Jobs
by Joe Hertvik

Unattended interactive jobs (also called inactive jobs) present a knotty administrative problem because they can create security exposures on your system, as well as place persistent object locks on files and records. Fortunately, OS/400 provides system values that automatically disconnect or end inactive jobs. Inactive jobs, where a sensitive application is sitting open and unattended on a user's desktop, can be dangerous. Since a lot of fraud and computer abuse happens inside a company, it's wise to lock down these jobs in a reasonable time frame. READ MORE >

Inovis Rises from Peregrine's Harbinger and Extricity Ashes
by Alex Woodie

The EDI and B2B e-commerce software components of Peregrine Systems' struggling business were quietly given new life earlier this month, when a group of investors launched a new company called Inovis to sell software that used to be marketed by two of Peregrine's recent acquisitions, Harbinger and Extricity. Based in the iSeries stronghold of Atlanta, Georgia, Inovis boasts some impressive figures for a startup: 520 employees, a $100 million annual revenue stream, and most important, profitability. Short-Term Financial Outlook Tough for App Vendors
by Alex Woodie

The poor financial performance among tech companies has spread across the economy like the flu in recent months, with just plain bad news coming from industry giants like SAP, Oracle, and EDS. Among the smaller application vendors that play dominant roles in the OS/400 ecosystem, the news is upsetting as well, with most publicly traded software companies reporting a drop in revenues on their most recent quarterly report and no short-term improvement in sight. Mad Dog 21/21: Radio Decidendi
by Hesh Wiener

Start with two clever, aggressive, pudgy businessmen named Louis. Add an adventurous damsel in undress known as the most beautiful woman in the world. Stir in an avant-garde composer, a bunch of player pianos, a munitions maker serving the Nazis, and some torpedoes. It could be a lesson from Hogwart's: The Curse of Lamarr. But it is, in fact, the story of wireless networks, and the cast includes Starbucks, Deutsche Telekom, and IBM. READ MORE >
