IBM Delivers Dynamic AIX Logical Partitioning, Readies More Regatta-M Servers
by Timothy Prickett Morgan
As expected, IBM will this week announce that it has delivered the AIX 5L Release 5.2 version of its Unix operating system for the pSeries machines, based on essentially the same hardware as the iSeries line. Sources familiar with IBM's plans also say Big Blue is readying its next "Regatta-M" midrange server for the pSeries line, along with Power4-II "GQ" processors, for a November launch. The Power4-II processors and various Regatta servers will presumably appear in 2003 in the iSeries line. READ MORE >

IBM Kills Many OS/400 Boxes, Making Way for Regattas
by Timothy Prickett Morgan
IBM is trimming its catalog of iSeries processors and related features. On December 3, IBM will no longer make many Pulsar, I-Star, and S-Star models in the AS/400 and iSeries product line. IBM is selling four different generations of hardware right now, and each has dozens of processor features and hundreds of possible configurations when interactive features are thrown in. IBM needs to simplify and clear the sales channel, particularly if new iSeries machines using Power4 and Power4-II processors are coming in 2003. READ MORE >

Microsoft Makes Share Gains with Windows on Servers
by Dan Burger
Microsoft came within a whisker of commandeering one half of all server operating systems shipped in 2001. According to market researcher IDC, Microsoft continued to pull away from its competitors, based on 2001 sales, which show Windows NT and Windows 2000 accounting for 49 percent of all server operating systems shipped that year. IDC's report on sales in 2000 showed Microsoft with 42 percent of the market. READ MORE >

Setting the Record Straight on Remote Journaling
by Larry Youngren
A Tech Insight column authored by Chris Hird and published on August 5 mistakenly left some people with the impression that the relatively new remote journaling feature in OS/400, being used in a number of high availability software solutions for the OS/400 market, does not support remote journaling of data queues, data areas, or the Integrated File System. This is untrue, as Larry Youngren, an OS/400 microcode designer intimately involved with journaling, explains. We wanted to make sure you see his comments, which were originally published in the Reader Feedback and Insights column on August 12. READ MORE >

Admin Alert: Readers' Insights on Inactive Jobs and QSTRUPJD Job Logs

One of the best things about the Admin Alert column is that I learn as much from the readers as you, hopefully, learn from me. Several readers have written in recent weeks to add to or correct some of the information I've presented. Here are a few of the more recent gems about inactive jobs and QSTRUP job logs that come straight from my e-mail inbox. My responses follow each e-mail. READ MORE >

As I See It: Evaluate This
by Victor Rozek
The most important annual event in the life of any employee is arguably the performance evaluation. Get a good one, and you may keep your job for another year, and perhaps even merit a raise. Get a bad one, and your life will be full of anxiety and stress. Why, then, is the evaluation process so often trite and shallow, void of substance or meaning? Even positive observations border on being vapid. "Bob communicates well with others." Wow, that's deep. READ MORE >
