Volume 11, Number 43 -- October 14, 2002

But Wait, There's More. . .

  • If you are trying to sort out the latest PTFs for OS/400 and its related systems programs that IBM has released, you need to check out the OS/400 PTF Guides, which our partner, DLB Associates, has compiled for you. The latest OS/400 PTF Guide is for Oct. 5. An archive of OS/400 PTF Guides is also available on our site.

  • The results of COMMON's recent elections are in, and the user group will usher in a new board of directors for 2003. COMMON president Charlie Massoglia was reelected for another three-year term, as was Paula Hodge, and Beverly Russell was elected for her first term. Massoglia, who owns his own consulting practice in Michigan, has served as president of the national OS/400 user group for the last two years and is currently serving his third term. Hodge, the IT director at the Braille Institute of America, has held various positions with the volunteer organization, including being the board's secretary for the last two years, and has also been a COMMON speaker. Russell, the board's only new member, has served for the last 12 years as a board member for an OS/400 user group in Toronto, where she is currently the treasurer; she served as president of that group for two non-consecutive terms during the 1990s. Russell is the IT director at E.D. Smith & Sons, a privately owned Canadian food manufacturer. All newly elected directors will begin their three-year terms following the fall COMMON conference being held in Denver, Colorado, this week.

  • IBM last week announced its intention to acquire EADS Matra Datavision, of Paris, France, to bolster IBM Global Service's product-lifecycle-management-services offerings. EADS Matra Datavision is a wholly owned subsidiary of EADS Group, one of the biggest defense contractors in Europe, and employs about 900 consultants in Europe and North American to help manufacturers improve product quality, reduce cost, and speed production times. IBM expects the acquisition, which is subject to regulatory approval and could close by January 1, to bolster its product-lifecycle-management software and services.

  • Can you picture yourself behind the lens of a brand new Canon Digital S200 camera? The folks over at michaels, ross & cole, an iSeries application development tool provider, sure can. The Chicago company announced last week that it is giving away one of these little babies (approximate retail price is $350) as part of its fall 2002 giveaway. The sweepstakes are all part of a drive to publicize mrc's latest development tool, mrc-Lightening CE, a downloadable Web application builder that uses CGI technology to communicate with OS/400 applications. The sweepstakes, open to all U.S. residents who are 18 years or older, close December 31. To enter the drawing, go to www.mrc-productivity.com/fall02contest.html.

  • Times are tough over at JDA Software Group, but the company is toughing it out. The Scottsdale, Arizona, software company last week announced the preliminary financial results for its third quarter, which ended September 30. The company expects to bring in about $11 million in revenue from software sales--far below the $18 million to $20 million that the company was expecting in August, and 28 percent less than the $15.6 million from software sales the company had in the same period last year. JDA issued a revenue shortfall warning on September 16, which caused its stock price to tumble from the $13 to $15 range to less than $7. Last week's disclosure did little to affect the stock price, which was trading for about $6 per share at press time. The company expects to issue its official third quarter results next Monday. JDA is a major player in the retail sector, which is being hit pretty hard in this poor economy, particularly in recent weeks with the longshoreman's strike on the West Coast.
