IBM Adds New IxS Cards, Expands IxAs, Adds Linux Adapter
by Timothy Prickett Morgan and Alex Woodie
IBM always likes to have new hardware to show off at the COMMON midrange trade show, which is probably why it last week announced enhancements to the inboard and outboard Intel-based coprocessor servers that can be linked into iSeries and AS/400 servers. The enhancements include a new Integrated xSeries Server card and an increased number of Integrated xSeries Adapter cards supported on many iSeries machines. IBM also debuted a new I/O card for Linux partitions. READ MORE >

A Smattering of Tweaks Come Out for OS/400 V5R2
by Timothy Prickett Morgan
It's the fourth quarter, and every sales person who goes into an iSeries or AS/400 account wants to have a new story to tell prospective buyers. IBM is in a fourth-quarter push with the iSeries, and has announced some tweaks to the OS/400 platform to give reps and business partners a reason to come a-calling, aside from the new hardware and the price cuts that were announced last week, which we report on elsewhere in this issue. IBM Slashes iSeries Feature Prices
by Timothy Prickett Morgan
One of the things that OS/400 shops are always complaining about is the high cost of main memory on the machines. While IBM has lots of sophisticated electronics and manufacturing tricks that make AS/400 and iSeries memory cards more costly to make and more valuable than PC server memory, it has still been too expensive. That's why IBM chopped the prices of many AS/400 and iSeries memory cards by 25 percent on October 8. Big Blue cut prices on other features, too. READ MORE >

Admin Alert: Configuring iSeries Partitions the Right Way
by Joe Hertvik
Like many OS/400 administrators, I deal with partitioned AS/400 and iSeries boxes. While partitioning is a great boon for server consolidation and isolating workloads into separate virtual iSeries boxes, there's one crucial item to take into account before you set up a partitioned iSeries box. The magic ingredient for happy partitioning is this: Don't use your controlling, or primary, partition as an iSeries production server. READ MORE >

IBM to Sell Linux-Only Regatta Servers?
by Timothy Prickett Morgan
IBM this week announced it has delivered AIX 5L Release 5.2 of its Unix operating system for pSeries RISC-Unix servers. While most Linux customers don't care much about what IBM does in the pSeries line, my sources at the company say that IBM might be readying a set of Linux-only Power4-based "Regatta" servers to take on the Unix installed base--including Big Blue's own AIX base. This would be a very interesting development, indeed. READ MORE >

Shaking IT Up: WASTE, or Why Acronyms Stunt Thought Exchange
by Kevin Vandever
An acronym is a word formed from the initial letters of words in a phrase. Its purpose is to simplify speaking and writing. The word laser, for instance, is really an acronym for "light amplification by stimulated emissions of radiation." SNADS is an acronym for "Systems Network Architecture Distribution Services." These are very appropriate and practical uses of acronyms. They help simplify communication without losing meaning. They also work well as words in their own right, which isn't a requirement for an acronym, but it is nice. READ MORE >
