IBM Completes i5 Squadrons with 64-Way Model 595
by Timothy Prickett Morgan

Throughout the history of the IBM midrange server line, processing capacity headroom was a big issue from time to time. System/38 customers could never get enough capacity, and the first five generations of AS/400 boxes didn't scale far enough, either. With this week's announcement of the 64-way eServer i5 Model 595, the headroom issue is moot. This is a lot more box than just about any OS/400 shop will likely ever need to run RPG or COBOL programs against the DB2/400 database. READ MORE >

IBM Revamps Midrange, High-End Storage Arrays
by Alex Woodie

IBM raised the bar in the midrange and high-end storage array business last week when it introduced two new disk subsystems that work with OS/400 and every other major server platform. The new TotalStorage DS6000, which begins at under $100,000, can scale from about 300 GB to 67 TB; it fits in a 3U form factor in its base configuration. The refrigerator-sized DS8000, based on IBM's p5 Model 570 Unix server, can expand up to 192 TB, but IBM says its architecture scales past a petabyte. READ MORE >

New IxS and Other i5-Related Announcements
by Timothy Prickett Morgan

As promised, IBM announced a new, more compact version of its Integrated xSeries Server (IxS) co-processor for the i5 server line last week. The company also made a number other announcements, including back-casting a new i5 RAID disk controller to the iSeries, offering a new i5 storage chassis, rejiggering software tiers on the Model 520, and adding more upgrade paths into the Model 520 from prior generations of iSeries servers. Mad Dog 21/21: Vulture Culture
by Hesh Wiener

Of all birds, vultures may have the worst public relations. Their unglamorous image, coupled with looks only another vulture could love, threatens to kill off a few Asian varieties, and to take along with them plenty of people, very likely through the painful means of rabies. Computing environments and application suites perform similar tasks, picking legacy applications and data from the bones of obsolete systems so users can move ahead. The value of backward compatibility is widely underestimated until it is withdrawn, trapping those who had counted on continuity. READ MORE >
