Replace 5250 with open XML?
Blow the lid off scalability with batch processing? That's the kind of outside-the-box thinking that evolves your iSeries to strategic Web architectures, leveraging hardware and software investments.
Introducing X-Caliber, a new LegaSuite module from SEAGULL that replaces the 5250 data stream with XML and moves processing out of interactive into exponentially more scalable batch mode.

IBM Says New iSeries Hardware, OS/400 Due in 2003
by Timothy Prickett Morgan
I've been trying for months to pin down what IBM is going to do with the iSeries in 2003, and have been getting mixed signals. According to some sources, IBM has no plans to announce new hardware or software in 2003. Others say there will be new hardware but no new software. While at COMMON last week, I got a very clear signal from high-level IBM sources who said that Big Blue will indeed roll out new iSeries products next year. READ MORE >

Driving Fast with Dr. Frank Soltis at the iSeries Nation Town Hall
by Alex Woodie
The OS/400 platform's founding father was in peak racing form during a 30-minute address to the faithful at the biannual iSeries Nation town hall meeting held during the COMMON conference in Denver last week. The two-hour event featured awards, customer stories, and an unusually tame "sound off" session. But the highlight of the show was Dr. Frank Soltis, iSeries chief scientist and Porsche aficionado, as he effectively wielded a sports-car analogy to communicate IBM's iSeries strategy. READ MORE >

A Conversation with IBM's New VP of iSeries Marketing
by Alex Woodie and Timothy Prickett Morgan
Marketing the OS/400 platform has always been a delicate dance for IBM. Trumpet the platform's benefits too much, and you risk disparaging Big Blue's other moneymakers. Cecelia Marrese, an 18-year IBM veteran, was recently promoted to the influential position of vice president of iSeries marketing. Guild Companies editors Timothy Pricket Morgan and Alex Woodie sat down to talk with Marrese at the COMMON conference in Denver last week. Here is an edited transcript of the conversation. Admin Alert: Configuring PC5250 for Inactive Job Disconnection
by Joe Hertvik
I didn't expect my column on dealing with inactive jobs to become a continuing story. It started a few weeks ago, when I explained how to configure OS/400 to dispose of inactive jobs. A week later, reader Robert Boling suggested additional configuration parameters, but we also discovered that automatic job disconnection didn't work correctly for some Telnet sessions. In this column, I'll resolve the Telnet disconnection problem by demonstrating how to configure PC5250 for fixed device names. READ MORE >

Big Blue Rises Above the IT Market Downdraft
by Timothy Prickett Morgan
Everybody is looking for a little good news these days, and IBM did its part by telling Wall Street analysts and investors last week that although 2002 was a tough year, the company would, as Sam Palmisano expected, do better than many of the other companies running in the IT pack and, more important, would return to double-digit profit growth in 2003. Yippee! And everybody started talking about how Big Blue is bucking the IT spending crunch. READ MORE >

Jacada Studio Leverages RPG, COBOL Skills to Make New GUI Apps
by Timothy Prickett Morgan
OS/400 shops using, and software houses peddling, green-screen applications have lots of ways to put a graphical front end on those applications that gives them the modern Windows or HTML look that users expect these days. Jacada, which has been selling tools for modernizing 3270 and 5250 apps for more than a decade, will today launch Jacada Studio for iSeries, a development tool that allows shops with RPG and COBOL applications to leverage their skills in those languages to create new GUI applications. As I See It: The Vision Thing
by Victor Rozek
While in college, I worked the swing shift at the local Coca Cola bottling plant, reconciling daily sales receipts against the actual product delivered by drivers. For me it was a temporary job; the work wasn't demanding and the hours suited my class schedule. But for others, selling Coke was a career, a fact that both intrigued and baffled me. So one day I asked the sales manager one of those impertinent questions with which the young challenge their elders. READ MORE >
