The iDeal iSeries, Part 3
by Timothy Prickett Morgan

I've got lots of feedback on the iDeal iSeries, and I will share as much of it as makes sense once I am done with the story series next week. In past iDeal iSeries stories, I've created the hypothetical hardware and suggested prices for them as well as for memory, disk, disk controller, operating system, database, and green screen connectivity components. This week, I'll bring it all together to see how these machines would compare to the real iSeries machines from IBM. READ MORE >

Green Streak Deal Ushers in New Customer Care Era for IBM
by Alex Woodie

Armed with a Siebel call center app and the most complete database of OS/400 users on the planet, more than 400 IBM sales reps have been hitting the phones hard lately, spreading the Green Streak gospel. So far, more than 1,000 OS/400 shops in North America have bought Green Streak boxes, while nearly 4,000 more are considering purchases. Green Streak ends December 13, but IBM says its legacy will live on, because it now has a method and a mandate for contacting every iSeries customer, every quarter. READ MORE >

Server Sales Rebound Slightly from Terrible Q3 Last Year
by Timothy Prickett Morgan

Hey, it could be worse. Server sales and shipments in the United States could have dropped from last year's third quarter. But according to analysts at Gartner's Dataquest unit, server shipments and revenues were up in the States. But don't get too excited. Analysts at the company say that sales in Europe and Asia will probably not be so great when it compiles those figures later this month, and worldwide server sales could slip a bit, despite gains in the U.S. sector. IBM Hopes Express Packaging Is the Fast Track to SMB Sales
by Dan Burger

IBM, a company that struggles to stand out in the small and midsized business (SMB) market, is about to step out and "Express" itself. Big Blue last week launched a new family of so-called Express software products that would benefit SMBs that think IBM is too pricey compared with alternative middleware and database solutions. The first round of Express products is aimed at Unix, Windows, and Linux platforms. But don't despair, iSeries fans. Your Express software is on the way. READ MORE >

As I See It: The Oregon Plan
by Victor Rozek

My friend Roy thought he knew what he valued most about his job. After all, he was a pilot for a major airline, and as such he enjoyed unlimited travel and earned an enviable salary. His lifestyle accoutrements include a stunning beach house, several cars, and a private hanger that houses his motor home and a vintage Stearman biplane. But the overriding value of his job would only become apparent after he noticed a strange swelling in his scrotum. READ MORE >
