Future iSeries Servers, Part 4
by Timothy Prickett Morgan

I never get tired of talking about the iSeries, and I sure hope you don't get tired of reading about IBM's plans for future versions of the box. For the past several weeks, I have written about the hardware underlying future iSeries servers, I/O technologies, and packaging. This week, in the final essay in this series, I want to talk about on-demand computing and systems management and the innovations that IBM has in store for the iSeries and for its eServers. WebSphere Portal Express Comes to OS/400
by Dan Burger

As IBM's monolithic WebSphere strategy unfolds, the latest nugget for the OS/400 platform is Portal Express, a product that was announced last week and will be made available December 4. It's not the first portal technology available to OS/400 shops, but it's likely to be the one you hear the most about as the mountain of WebSphere marketing casts its long shadow. If you are on board with WebSphere, Portal Express could grab your attention, and even if you're not, it's an interesting indicator of where cross-platform-integration technology is going. Eclipse Visual Editor Project Unites Java GUI Methods
by Timothy Prickett Morgan

The Eclipse consortium and open-source development tool project, which was funded with a $40 million grant from IBM two years ago, to create a single, Java-based toolkit framework that would allow other development tools to snap into that framework, has just launched a Visual Editor project that is being spearheaded by David Orme of Advanced Systems Concepts. Sun, AMD Alliance Targets Entry and Guild Companiess
by Timothy Prickett Morgan

As has been widely rumored for months, Sun Microsystems and Advanced Micro Devices last week tied the knot at the Comdex trade show in Las Vegas to deliver a complete line of Opteron-based servers in the next calendar year. The move will initially silence some critics who have complained that Sun has not faced the hard realities that its UltraSparc platform has fallen woefully behind the competition. Mad Dog 21/21: Post Mortem
by Hesh Weiner

Organized message delivery systems are as old as civilization itself. The Egyptians had some kind of postal system in place as far back as 2000 B.C. More than 2,500 years ago, Cyrus the Great set up a kind of pony express in his Persian empire. The Chinese had a postal system in place long before that, and maybe even before the Egyptians had theirs. (We'd know a lot more if more records had been preserved.) The Romans did a bang-up job that included the extensive construction of post roads. Fast-forward a few millennia, to e-mail. It's hard to say whether this is the future of the post or the end of it.
