international Business (machines)
by Timothy Prickett Morgan
The top brass of IBM held their semi-annual audience with the Wall Street analyst community last week. For as long as I can remember, IBM has invited me to this event, presumably because I do a lot of financial reporting about Big Blue, outside of Guild Companies. I decided to go to it last week, in the hope that something interesting would happen. It did. I learned a few things, which I would like to share with you and ponder a little further. READ MORE >

Gartner Says Server Sales Up a Tiny Bit in Q3
by Timothy Prickett Morgan
While server shipments have been up a healthy amount in recent quarters, what we have been all looking for as sellers and consumers of servers is an uptick in server revenues. If vendors are actually making money selling servers, that is a pretty good indication that the economy is on the mend. Well, if server stats are an economic barometer, then the latest numbers from Gartner's Dataquest unit would seem to indicate that the economies in North America, Europe, and Asia are stabilizing. Lakeview and DataMirror Make Acquisitions
by Alex Woodie
The wave of consolidation in the software industry continues with new acquisitions by Lakeview Technology and DataMirror. Lakeview's acquisition of Availant, which codeveloped High Availability Cluster Multiprocessing (HACMP) software for IBM's pSeries servers, could turn into real coup when IBM brings its OS/400 and AIX operating systems together on its Power-based servers next year. Meanwhile, DataMirror's acquisition of PointBase gives the company new tools for its RFID initiative. READ MORE >

Admin Alert: Don't Forget Which OS/400 Box You're Attached To
by Joe Hertvik
On partitioned OS/400 servers, or in larger shops where there are multiple machines, it's fairly common for administrators working on one OS/400 partition to start a Telnet session on a second partition by using the OS/400 Start TCP/IP Telnet command (TELNET). While this is a handy feature to use, it can also lead to confusion and, possibly, accidental system damage. READ MORE >

Disk Array Sales Firming Up, Says IDC
by Timothy Prickett Morgan
On configured midrange and enterprise servers today, main memory and disk storage can account for anywhere from 50 to 70 percent of the total cost of acquiring that system. So you would think that it would be relatively easier to make money selling disk arrays, right? Wrong. The disk market has been cut-throat for years, and it shows no sign of abating any time soon. But with business perking up a bit, makers of disk arrays are saw their top lines stabilize in the third quarter, according to an analysis of the market released by IDC late last week. READ MORE >
