Analysts Prognosticate About IT in 2004
by Timothy Prickett Morgan
It's a tradition for the major IT consultancies to get out their crystal balls and predict what will happen in the IT sector in the coming year, and years to follow. Any consultancy is ultimately judged by the accuracy of its predictions, so it's a good thing that many of us don't check their batting averages on their prognostications. IT predictions are fun, if not always accurate, and are an indication of the issues we are all facing. READ MORE >

IBM Raises WebSphere Development Studio Prices
by Timothy Prickett Morgan
If you're thinking about adopting IBM's WebSphere Development Studio tools to create RPG and Java applications for your AS/400 or iSeries server, the cost of that software just got a lot more expensive. The company has just jacked up the prices, after slashing them last year. To cushion the blow, somewhat, IBM is offering a special discount on the software until the end of March next year. AS/400 Programmer Convicted of Computer Fraud
by Alex Woodie
An AS/400 programmer in Florida was given a one-year sentence earlier this month for intentionally deleting his former employer's critical OS/400 applications. Federal officials say Jesus C. Diaz caused more than $80,000 in damages and left Hellmann Worldwide Logistics' AS/400 systems down for 48 hours, when he remotely accessed the system and deleted the applications he had set up. But thanks to quick thinking on the company's part, officials were able to track Diaz down. READ MORE >

Admin Alert: Does ENDJOBABN Prevent PTF Applications?
by Joe Hertvik
In "Admin Alert: Reader Feedback on How ENDJOBABN Affects PTF Application," I noted that using ENDJOBABN causes the previous end of system indicator, QABNORMSW, to be set to 1 (abnormal ending), which prevents PTFs from being applied at IPL time. I recently received an e-mail indicating that this might not be the case with OS/400 V5, and the problem may have been fixed as far back as OS/400 V3. READ MORE >

As I See It: A Shopper's Guide to an IT Christmas
by Victor Rozek
So it's that time of year again. Christmas. A time when people who aren't already killing each other, treat each other nicely for a couple of weeks. Given today's grim reality, it's somewhat ironic that it all started in the Middle East. From a humble manger to "Forgive them father, for they know not what they do." It's been over 2,000 years since that message was delivered, but the birthplace of the Prince of Peace is still a war zone. We're slow learners. READ MORE >
