Chip Makers Strut Their Stuff at ISSCC

Chip geeks and semiconductor mavens from around the world are converging on San Francisco this week to show off their latest innovations at the annual IEEE's International Solid State Circuits Conference. This is one of the two annual events where a lot of advances in chip design are first revealed to the world--the other being the Hot Chips conference hosted in the summer. AMD Delivers Faster and Cooler Rev F Opteron Chips

Advanced Micro Devices last week cranked the clock another notch on its dual-core Rev F Opteron processors, raising the top speed of the chips to 2.8 GHz. And because AMD is in a price and technology war with Intel, AMD is giving customers that extra 200 MHz of performance at the same price as it charged for its 2.6 GHz parts and has cut prices across the line as it shifts its bins. Zend Upgrades Commercial Add-Ons for Its PHP Engine

PHP creator and commercializer Zend Technologies yesterday announced the third release of its Zend Platform PHP engine for enterprise-grade PHP applications. The Zend Platform software takes the open source PHP engine, which is distributed with open source Linux operating systems under a GPL license, and adds features to it for content caching, load balancing, high availability clustering, and monitoring and management. The basic PHP engine is free, but Zend Platform costs money, and the price varies depending on the features companies want to use. READ MORE >
