Novell Does BrainShare, Creates Mono .NET Development Tool
Published: March 18, 2008

Commercial Linux distributor Novell is kicking off its BrainShare 2008 user and partner conference in Salt Lake City, Utah, this week, and the highlight of the show thus far has been the prototype Linux-MaxDB setups that I told you about last week that German software giant SAP is prototyping to run its applications. But Novell has also announced a new open source development tool for its Mono clone of Microsoft's .NET tools.
That tool, called MonoDevelop 1.0, is an application development tool that supports the Visual Studio project formats and C# programming language that are integral to Microsoft's .NET protocol and development model. The idea behind MonoDevelop is to allow programmers to create C# applications (and, indeed, any programming language that runs in Microsoft's Common Language Runtime execution environment for .NET) and ASP.NET Web front ends and then deploy them on Windows, Linux, or Mac OS X platforms. Developers would use the real Visual Studio to deploy on Windows, and MonoDevelop to deploy on Linux and Mac OS X.
In addition to the new development tool, Novell also said last week that the Mono 2.0 development framework is now in beta. The updated Mono framework supports the Microsoft .NET 2.0 framework and has a preview of the .NET 3.5 framework preview. Mono 2.0 also has a migration analysis tool to help customers assess how ready their .NET applications are to make the move to Mono. Not every feature of .NET is supported in Mono, so you have to look before you leap. The Mono 2.0 runs on Linux, Mac OS X, BSD Unix, and Solaris. The Mono 2.0 beta and the MonoDevelop tool are available at www.mono-project.com. No word about when it will come out of beta and be production grade.
We'll tell you all about BrainShare in next week's issue.
