Update Makes Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 More Scalable
by Timothy Prickett Morgan

Early on, the scalability of the Linux operating system--or more precisely, the lack thereof--was a hindrance to the adoption of Linux as a strategic platform for enterprise-class applications that needed more than one or two processors. But over the years, the scalability of Linux has been stretched such that it can span much of the very scalable hardware to which it has been ported. But, there's always room for more, and that is why Red Hat last week put out an update to its Enterprise Linux 4 to extend SMP scalability even further. READ MORE >

Mandriva Founder Laid Off, Starts New OS Project
by Timothy Prickett Morgan

Gael Duval, the founder of the Mandrakesoft Linux distribution that dates from late 1998 and one of the key executives at commercial Linux distributor Mandriva was one of the employees laid off in a series of cost-cutting measures that Mandriva undertook after losing money in the final quarter of 2005. HP Announces High-End 'Arches' Chipset for Integrities
by Timothy Prickett Morgan

There is no doubt that Hewlett-Packard was hoping to make a big splash with its third generation "Arches" sx2000 chipset for Itanium servers and launch the Integrity servers based on the dual-core "Montecito" Itanium processors as a single package. But with the Montecitos running late, and HP needing to keep competitive, the company yesterday launched the Arches chipset and two relatively large Intergity servers and high-end Superdomes based on it without the Montecito chips. Intel Launches Low-Power Xeon LV Chip for Servers
by Timothy Prickett Morgan

As Intel promised it would do at the big Intel Developer Forum shindig a few weeks ago, the company last week delivered its first very low power Xeon chip for servers, one that consumes a lot less electricity and generates a lot less heat than a normal Xeon server chip. This chip, code-named "Sossaman," is being sold as the Xeon LV, and like other chips in the Core microarchitecture that Intel unveiled at IDF, it is based on a modified Pentium M processor, originally designed for laptops.
