Canonical Launches Ubuntu 8.04 with Long Term Support
by Timothy Prickett Morgan

As expected and right on time, commercial Linux distributor Canonical this week launched its next iteration of Ubuntu Linux, dubbed 8.04 because it ships in April 2008. Ubuntu 8.04 comes in server and desktop variants, and is available with extended support, which Canonical calls Long Term Support and which guarantees that tech support and security patches will be available for five years on servers and for three years on desktops. Novell Puts Out JEOS Beta, Starts Appliance Effort
by Timothy Prickett Morgan

Last fall, at the VMworld 2007 virtualization conference hosted by VMware, the juggernaut in the X86 and X64 hypervisor space, commercial Linux distributor Canonical announced that it was creating a streamlined variant of Linux it dubbed Ubuntu JEOS, short for Just Enough Operating System. This JEOS Linux was intended to be used as the core system inside a virtual machine appliance. The idea has taken hold now over at Novell, which last week announced its own SUSE Appliance Program and a beta of SUSE Linux Enterprise JEOS. READ MORE >

Server Makers Start Shipping Barcelona Boxes
by Timothy Prickett Morgan

The top brass at chip maker Advanced Micro Devices must be breathing a sigh of partial relief, now that the quad-core Barcelona variants of the Rev F Opteron processors have begun shipping in servers made by AMD's OEM partners. I say it is a partial sigh of relief because the shipment of the delayed and once faulty Barcelona chip to OEM customers roughly coincides with an announcement that AMD is going to cut around 10 percent of its workforce and the departure of Phil Hester as its chief technology officer. The X Factor: Everybody Wants Citrix Systems?
by Timothy Prickett Morgan

With the economy bumping along, sometimes up and sometimes down, depending on the metrics you want to use, and big IT suppliers looking for rich, new markets to mine, every time someone gets bored and the news gets a little slow, out comes another merger and acquisition rumor. In recent weeks, the chatter out on there on the Internet and at the water coolers of IT suppliers looking for a deal and Wall Street banks looking for some good news (and visa versa) is that Citrix Systems, which itself just last year spent a fortune to acquire server and desktop hypervisor expert XenSource, is possibly in play. IBM's Q1 Driven by Mainframes, Unix, Services, and the Weak Dollar
by Timothy Prickett Morgan

That good ole annuity-style revenue stream, which accounts for a little more than half of IBM's sales in any given quarter, was gurgling and burbling along in the first quarter of 2008, helping to float the company's product sales and delivering pretty hefty overall revenue and profit increases considering the shaky nature of the economy in the United States. And lucky for Big Blue, three-quarters of its revenues come from outside the United States, which means the weak dollar amplifies overseas sales when they are brought back to IBM HQ. READ MORE >
