Red Hat Buys MetaMatrix to Add Data Integration to the JBoss Middleware Stack

Commercial Linux distributor Red Hat last week said that it has made yet another acquisition to build out its software portfolio. This time around, a company called MetaMatrix, which has a specialty in providing data management tools for integrating data from disparate systems and providing the auditing tools to see who has access to what information where in the network.
MetaMatrix has three different products. MetaMatrix Enterprise is a services layer for providing access to information stored in disparate systems and allows data to be accessed through relational queries as well as through Web services protocols. MetaMatrix Dimension is a subset of this tool that just delivers XML and Web services access to data stores. MetaMatrix Query is used to create a single JDBC-based service that allows applications to query multiple relational databases using this service; by doing this, the data access and integration with application code can be decoupled, which means it is easier to program Java applications that need to talk to multiple databases that, as far as Java is concerned, look like one giant database.
The MetaMatrix tools will be rolled into the JBoss Enterprise Middleware System and will presumably also be made available as open source products. Like the JBoss application server and related development tools, MetaMatrix were supported on various operating systems, and this will continue to be the case after they are merged into the Red Hat product line.
