How's Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 Doing?
by Timothy Prickett Morgan
One of the great things about the double-barrel open source software and fee-based subscription support strategy that commercial Linuxes have is that there is very little economic pressure on Linux shops to upgrade from one version of the platform to another as their Linux vendor (or vendors) tweak, change, upgrade, and improve their distros. They get to move when they feel like it, and vendors who want to keep their customers agree to support their older releases for a long, long time. READ MORE >

AMD Finishes Off Quad Cores with Budapest Opterons
by Timothy Prickett Morgan
Advanced Micro Devices last week finally finished getting its quad-core Rev F lineup of processors into the field with the delivery of the 'Budapest' Opteron 1300 series of chips for single-socket workstations and servers. The Budapest chips are going to make some server makers, who have built machines based on the 940-pin AM2 socket, very happy and the single-socket boxes are one place where AMD can point to market share gains for its Opteron lineup, despite Intel's two-year onslaught. Forget About Platforms, Let's Talk About Jobs
by Timothy Prickett Morgan
As a long-time watcher of the systems and server area--at least by IT journalism standards, where journos usually burn out after five to 10 years in the field--I take a keen interest in any means of ranking the different platforms of the world. In the absence of truly impartial data, I am always on the lookout for a new way to compare different platforms. For the past couple of weeks, I have been playing around with the Internet's major search engines to rank various server platform brands, and this week I continue the series, this time looking at what really matters to most of us: jobs. As I See It: Citizen CEO
by Victor Rozek
Think of yourself as the CEO of your life. Your budget, like that of your competitors, is 8,760 hours per year. How do you vote with your time, money, and energy? What do you say 'yes' to, and what do you say 'no' to? Given all of your different personas (the goof-off, the responsible one, the dreamer, the provider, the visionary, the critic, the good child, etc.), which has controlling interest of the enterprise that is you? Who are the stockholders you are obliged to please? Who sits on your board of directors; and who has veto power? And, if you're not fully enjoying your work, whose dreams you are living? READ MORE >

Looks Like Unisys Is Reselling Sun's X4600 Opteron Boxes
by Timothy Prickett Morgan
Server maker Unisys has plenty of experience in creating sophisticated server designs based on myriad chip architectures. What it does not have is a high-volume server business. After taking a run at the high-end Windows server business in 2000 through 2005 with its ES7000 line, the Systems and Technology Group at the company has forged a partnership with NEC to make a new generation of boxes and, in the interim before those machines come to market, is partnering with others to OEM their servers.
