NEC Pushes SuSE Enterprise Server 9 Performance Up

Japanese server maker NEC has announced another killer benchmark test result on its "Asama" Express5800/1320Xd Itanium server running Linux. The new TPC-C online benchmark test result on the 32-way Express5800 server demonstrates not only that clock-for-clock the Itanium processor can deliver the same performance per processor as the best RISC processors, but also that with the 2.6 kernel Linux can scale as well as any Unix operating system out there. HP, Red Hat Launch Sophisticated File Systems for Linux

While everyone seems to be thrilled by the prospect of clustering together relatively inexpensive Lintel iron for database or number-crunching work, managing a cluster is a bit of a nightmare and no one talks about that so much. Tuning network interconnections is a pain, and getting compute nodes to run at reasonable utilizations is also tough. Bull Beefs Up NovaScale Itanium Servers

French server maker Groupe Bull has announced that it has fleshed out it Itanium-based NovaScale server line, which offers support for Linux and Windows operating systems as well as Bull's own GCOS 8 proprietary environment. The NovaScale machines were announced in March 2003 amidst a long line of restructurings and government bailouts, and have been enhanced as the French company tries to adjust to the harsh realities of today's server market. Novell Raises $600 Million War Chest

Commercial Linux distributor Novell announced at the end of June that it would float $500 million of debt on the market to raise money for acquisitions and to buy back a block if its stock. The debt offering was oversubscribed, and Novell was actually able to rake in $600 million. What will Novell do with all of this money?
