A Little More Info on Red Hat Enterprise MRG
by Timothy Prickett Morgan

Back in December 2007, commercial Linux distributor Red Hat announced its own entry in the realtime operating system space, throwing messaging and grid computing middleware into the mix for good measure. The product, called Red Hat Enterprise MRG (pronounced 'merge'), is a collage of a number of different technologies, all of which are based on more modern variant of the Linux kernel that has been equipped to provide a consistent latency in transaction and message processing. IBM Sells 60 Teraflops Power6-Linux Super in Holland
by Timothy Prickett Morgan

Server maker IBM has spent more than a decade taking on the supercomputer market, and has become one of the big dogs, if not the big dog, when it comes to building different styles of high performance computer clusters. Last week, the company announced its first big Power6-based Power 575 supercomputer running Linux, nicknamed Huygens after the famous Dutch scientist, which was sold to SARA Computing and Networking, the national supercomputing network built and managed by the national government in The Netherlands. Sun Updates MySQL Carrier-Grade Clustered Database
by Timothy Prickett Morgan

It is no secret that server maker Sun Microsystems got its real start in the server racket when telecommunications companies stopped wanting to buy proprietary minicomputers and mainframes to run their vast billing and application systems and started using Unix gear instead. With the dot-com buildout in the latter half of the 1990s, Sun expanded its market to include various kinds of service providers, including those who sell Internet services, as well as to the companies that make network switching equipment, or NEPs. Mad Dog 21/21: Mission Possible
by Hesh Wiener

Commercial trends in every productive society sometimes run to excess. Information technology may be reaching such an apogee, getting just a little too complicated for its own good, and for the good of everyone it touches. It's starting to look like computing needs to get back to basics and, if possible, to do so in good taste. There's plenty of precedent: When Victorian Britain became overwhelmed by industrialization, it spawned the Arts and Crafts design movement. Whatever the case, the coincidence, if that is all that indeed it is, that the VMware subsidiary of disk array maker and software wannabe EMC decided to oust its co-founder, Diane Greene, as president and chief executive officer, at the same time as Microsoft delivered its Hyper-V hypervisor for Windows, and replaced her with a Microsoft hotshot is still pretty jarring.
