While Unix has stopped being the center of gravity in the server market as it was during the 1990s IT boom, the operating system and its associated high-end servers still comprise a vital portion of the server segment even if Unix (in aggregate) no longer commands the lion's share of server sales each year. That is why IBM has worked feverishly to get its Power5-based "Squadron" line of servers running much-improved versions of Linux and Big Blue's AIX Unix variant out the door. Red Hat's Minor Restatement Shakes Up Wall Street

Wall Street sure is jumpy about commercial Linux distributor Red Hat these days, and Red Hat isn't helping matters. On July 13, Red Hat announced that it would have to restate its revenues and earnings for the past three years as it shifted the revenue recognition for Linux software subscriptions from a monthly equation to a daily one. IBM Raises Rates on Server Financing Deals

With interest rates on the rise again, the term "low-rate financing" might soon take on a different meaning. The Federal Reserve has voted to raise a key interest rate. The anticipation of that move, which was relatively minor, is nonetheless giving captive financing companies the chance to shoot the gap between reality and perception and to make some extra money.
