Intel Cranks Out Two More Quads, AMD Sets Barcelona Date

Last week, Intel put out two more quad-core Xeon processors for servers and workstations in the wake of AMD finally setting a real launch date for its 'Barcelona' quad-core Opteron processors, aimed at the same machinery. Tilera Launches 64-Core, Linux-Based Mesh Processor

The annual Hot Chips conference for microprocessor and other chip designers is going on this week in Silicon Valley, and one of the hot--or rather, cool--new vendors showing off its new chip is a company called Tilera. The company, which is based on ideas from research performed at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, has created a 64-core processor called the Tile64. This chip has a whole new instruction set architecture that, Tilera hopes, will shake up the appliance business soon and maybe the server market some day. READ MORE >

Citrix Buys Virtualization Challenger XenSource for $500 Million

Citrix Systems, a software provider that is best known for its access products that link remote users to central systems, stunned the IT market by acquiring the up-and-coming server and desktop virtualization vendor, XenSource, just a day after a chunk of rival virtualization juggernaut VMware was sold off in an initial public offering. The acquisition also follows the launch of XenEnterprise V4 last week, which is a credible alternative to VMware's Infrastructure 3 server virtualization tools. READ MORE >


Court Says Novell Owns Unix, Not SCO

After what seems like an eternity of waiting, a judge has finally come to some conclusions in the hairball of legal cases that The SCO Group launched against IBM, Red Hat, Novell, and a number of user companies deploying Linux.
