Open Enterprise Server Not Launching September 26

When is a product launch not a product launch? Why, when it is a pre-launch event. And that, alas, is what Novell is hosting through three different Webcasts--all at 2 p.m. local time in the United States, Europe, and Asia on September 26--for its future Open Enterprise Server 2 operating system.

Last week, with perhaps a little too much exuberance, I interpreted the invitation that I received from Novell--as many customers surely did, too--as the actual announcement of OES 2. "It's a good piece, I enjoyed reading it," said Kevan Barney, senior manager of public relations at Novell, referring to last week's story. "But I wanted to point out that OES 2 is not 'launching' (or available) on September 26. There are live, pre-launch Web events happening that day in the US, EMEA and Asia/Pacific, but those aren't announcing or marking the availability of the product. That will come sometime after. Thought you'd want to know. . . . we'll surely keep you posted when we do make the big announcement. :-)"

Exactly when OES 2 will come to market is not known. The LinuxWorld Conference is being hosted in London, England, on October 23 and 24, if Novell wants to hang the launch on an event. Time will tell.
