Novell Combines NetWare and Linux with Open Enterprise Server

Novell discussed its plan to merge its proprietary NetWare and open source SuSE Linux operating system assets last week at its BrainShare Europe 2004 conference last week in Barcelona, Spain. The vendor announced that the closed private beta for Open Enterprise Server (OES), which will include both NetWare and SuSE Linux kernels and which will target Windows server operating systems for replacement, is nearing an end and that the public beta will start in November. Mandrakesoft Rolls Out 10.1 Community Linux

Mandrakesoft, one of the second-tier commercial Linux distributors that has a dominant position in its home market of France, last week announced Mandrakelinux 10.1 Community, its latest iteration of the Linux platform. Mandrakesoft started formalizing a process last year whereby it would launch a Community edition of its products, with all the latest features, ahead of a production version intended for customers, which is called an Official edition. One of the main staples of the IT consultancy business is polling C-level executives about their plans for IT spending so that these very same consultancies can sell predictions of IT spending back to those same execs. It's a nice piece of business if you can get it, and Forrester Research, which bought GIGA Group a few years ago, has been making as much noise as Gartner and IDC in calling IT spending up or down for the coming years.
