Microsoft and Novell Open 'Interoperability Lab'

Published: September 25, 2007

by Alex Woodie

Microsoft and Novell have officially launched an "interoperability lab" in Cambridge, Massachusetts, where the two companies will work to design and test new technologies and products that allow Windows Server and SUSE Linux Enterprise Server to work well together.

Microsoft and Novell have been appearing in public together for almost a year now, ever since they unveiled their controversial partnership to resolve patent, intellectual property, and other issues. As part of that pact, the two companies promised to work together to improve Windows-SLES interoperability on a number of fronts, including management, virtualization, document format compatibility, and directory integration.

With last week's unveiling of the interoperability lab, the two companies are finally getting around to putting boots on the ground to follow through with those commitments. \r\nThe companies say they have committed their "best and brightest" employees to work in the 2,500 square-foot lab, which will be stocked with 80 servers of various architectures, and a storage area network.

The first project on tap will be ensuring interoperability between Microsoft and Novell virtualization technologies, the companies said. Additional work down the line will include standards-based systems management, identity federation, and compatibility of office document formats. No timelines were provided for the availability of any products that will feature improvements originating from the lab.

Microsoft announced the opening of another interoperability lab last week, this one with Sun Microsystems, another fierce competitor of Microsoft's that the software giant has been trying to make nice with lately. The interoperability lab with Sun will be hosted on Microsoft's campus in Redmond, Washington, and will target improved Java performance on Windows.
