AMD Cranks Up Dual-Core Opteron Clocks

Chip maker Advanced Micro Devices continues to crank up the clock cycles on its dual-core 64-bit Opteron processors, and yesterday announced that it had delivered dual-core chips running at 2.4 GHz, a bump up of 200 MHz that gives the Opteron a bit more performance advantage compared to single- and dual-core Xeon processors from Intel in the same power class. Dell Starts Peddling Dual-Core Paxville Xeon DPs in PowerEdges

While the dual-core "Paxville" Xeon DP processors, which were not even a planned product until fairly recently, are not quite ready to ship in volume, Dell has once again received the pole position in the Intel server processor race and is being allowed to sell PowerEdge servers using Intel's first dual-core Xeon DP ahead of all other server vendors. IDC Concurs that Q2 Was Pretty Good for Servers

The box counters at IDC have offered their second opinion of the server market's health in the second quarter of 2005, following a similar status report from rival Gartner. IDC pegs the server market a smidgen higher, with $12.2 billion in sales for the quarter across all architectures and vendors, up 5 percent compared to the same quarter last year. Significantly, this is the ninth consecutive quarter of revenue growth for the server market, and it basically represents a return to sales levels we saw in 2001. READ MORE >

 

Egenera Gets $300 Million Reseller Deal with Fujitsu-Siemens

Blade server maker Egenera has announced that it has negotiated a $300 million reseller agreement with Fujitsu Siemens Computers, the European arm of the Fujitsu and Siemens information technology partnership.
