Oracle Launches Unbreakable Linux Variant of RHEL

If commercial Linux distributor Red Hat didn't like CentOS, which has created a variant of its Enterprise Linux software stack, then Red Hat must not like Oracle very much right now. Last week, to close out the OpenWorld customer event in San Francisco, the database, middleware, and application software vendor finished off its software stack when it announced Unbreakable Linux, a RHEL derivative with Oracle bug fixes and Oracle technical support. Red Hat Reacts to Oracle's Unbreakable Linux

As you might expect, the top brass at Red Hat have put the best face forward possible on the news that Oracle last week announced support services for a Linux variant based exclusively on various Red Hat Enterprise Linux. The company displayed humor at the Oracle OpenWorld event, where it was in the expo area quickly creating red T-shirts emblazoned with the phrase "Unfakeable Linux" on them. Dell Launches Its First Opteron-Based Servers

Server and PC maker Dell, smarting from market share declines and competitive pressures among other problems, started to rectify its position in the server market last week by launching its first two Opteron-based PowerEdge servers. Back in May, after a downturn in its financial results, Dell said that it would stop its Intel-exclusive strategy, and last week Dell and alternate chip partner Advanced Micro Devices chose the Oracle OpenWorld event in San Francisco as the stage on which to launch the machines. Sun Builds on Growth in Fiscal Q1, But Profits Still Elude

Server and operating system maker Sun Microsystems continues to make progress on getting its business in order, and last week reported that for the first quarter of fiscal 2007 ended October 1 it saw sales rise by 17 percent to just under $3.2 billion. And while Sun was able to reduce the size of its loss in fiscal Q1, to $56 million, the company still has a ways to go to reach its long-term goal of 10 percent gross operating profits. READ MORE >
