Getting from here to there, reliably

From point A to point B, sometimes through point C and oftentimes on to D or E, more than 200,000 passengers a day count on ANA to get them to their destinations on time.

So, through more than 800 flights per day, ANA's Flight Management System sees to it, that, as Japan's leading airline in on-time performance, ANA continues to remain on time.

And behind this benchmark of punctuality, working away millisecond by millisecond, is HP technology. Find out more.

Unix Is the Touchstone for Big Iron
by Timothy Prickett Morgan

Believe it or not, in the entry and midrange server market, it is Unix servers, not Wintel or Lintel servers, that are setting the price/performance pace. (We'll prove it to you next week.) And up in the enterprise server space, Unix dominates, but vendors of Windows, Linux, and proprietary machines are all trying to get a piece of the action, too. READ MORE >

SCO Bleeds Red Ink, Delays Future OpenServer
by Timothy Prickett Morgan

Unix software maker The SCO Group announced its financial results for the fourth fiscal quarter of 2004 just before Christmas, and the results indicate that the pressure is mounting in its Unix-on-X86 software business. Revelation: Why HP's Commitment to Itanium Is Unwavering--Really
by Timothy Prickett Morgan

The IT press was having a field day as 2004 was winding down, with rumors circulating that a staff of chip designers Hewlett-Packard has had stationed in Fort Collins, Colorado, assisting with the design of the Itanium chips with partner Intel, had been moved to Intel. The interpretation of what this small move meant was nearly uniform--that HP was, in back-handed way, washing its hands of Itanium--and it was also completely ass-backward. READ MORE >

As I See It: Dead Peasants
by Victor Rozek

The concept of life insurance always struck me as being ironic. Essentially, you're laying bets on your own early demise, while someone happily pockets your monthly premiums and wagers that you'll live for a very long time. Of course, the reason why we bet against our own survival is that our families will benefit, should we die prematurely. So, in a cautious if twisted way, wagering on your early demise makes sense. But what if your employer was also betting on your premature death? READ MORE >
