Sun Cuts Price Tags on Galaxy Opteron Servers

Seeking to boost its sales volumes in the X64 space, keep the competitive pressures on rivals in that sector of the market, and to protect its own Solaris franchise from further incursions by Windows and Linux, Sun Microsystems this week slashed prices on its "Galaxy" Opteron servers--the Sun Fire X2100, X4100, and X4200 servers--which were announced last summer to much fanfare.
The X2100 is a single-socket Opteron machine, while the X4100 and X4200 are two-socket machines. Sun also cut prices on the prior generation of Sun Fire V40z servers, which are still its only four-socket Opteron machines because Sun has not yet announced Galaxy boxes with four and eight sockets, as it is expected to do this year.
The price cuts ranged from 10 to 17.4 percent on the X2100s, from 17 to 37.2 percent on the X4100s, from 16.4 to 35.7 percent on the X4200s, and from 7.7 to 28.6 percent on the V40z machines. See the table below for all the details.
