IBM Certifies Solaris for Selected X64 Servers

Back in August 2007, server makers IBM and Sun Microsystems inked an OEM agreement that allows Big Blue to preload Solaris 10 and sell related technical support services to its own server customers. This week, IBM rolled out support on selected System x rack servers and BladeCenter blade servers.

The BladeCenter LS41 and HS21 blade servers machines can now be configured Solaris 10. The LS41 is IBM's two-socket blade server that uses the dual-core "Santa Rosa" Rev F Opteron processors from Advanced Micro Devices, while the HS21 supports the dual-core "Woodcrest" Xeon 5100, quad-core "Clovertown" Xeon 5300, and quad-core "Harpertown" Xeon 5400 processors. Solaris is also now an option for the System x 3755, a four-socket rack server based on dual-core Opterons; the System x 3650, a two-socket rack server that uses dual-core and quad-core Intel Xeons; and the System x 3852 M2, a brand new four-socket machine announced last week that is based on Intel's quad-core "Tigerton" Xeon 7300 processors.

Solaris is no longer a priced feature at Sun, but tech support for the operating system certainly has charges. IBM is selling Solaris support contracts under the feature number 5731-SOL, and it is available for machines with up to two sockets with either a standard (9x5) or premium (24x7) support contract and for machines with between three to eight sockets with the same standard or premium options. Each of those four options has its own price, but IBM did not provide pricing for these support contracts in its announcement.

IBM will begin bundling Solaris on these machines starting February 29.
