Intel Goes After AMD with New Chip Architecture

As the semi-annual Intel Developer Forum kicked off on Tuesday, the head techies at the chip maker opened up the show by going through the new 'Core Microarchitecture' that will be at the heart the company's impending line of mobile, desktop, and server processors. And while Intel was loathe to invoke Advanced Micro Devices by name, its main rival was clearly in attendance and seen as the major driver for the changes Intel is forging into its chips. Intel Gearing Up for Battle on the Server Front

Intel has been talking about its future dual-core server processors for so long now that it is hard to remember that many of them are not shipping yet and that rival Advanced Micro Devices has been able to use its competitive advantage in performance and thermals to capture quite a bit of market share. Transitive Gets Backing from Intel for Porting Product

About 18 months ago, an unknown software startup called Transitive launched a product called QuickTransit, which allows operating systems and applications that were designed for one computing architecture to be run, without changes, on another architecture. Last summer, Transitive broke onto the scene when Silicon Graphics chose it to support Irix Unix applications created for MIPS servers on its Linux-Itanium Altix machines, and then was made famous when Apple used QuickTransit at the heart of the Rosetta environment that allowed it to quickly move from PowerPC to Intel processors. In 1865, John Wilkes Booth shot Abraham Lincoln. Today, one of his relatives, Cherie Booth (Blair), is the First Lady of the United Kingdom. In its youth, IBM was insanely jealous of its rivals. But by the mid-1970s, the mature IBM was so secure in its dominance of information processing that it felt it could, without risk, tell the world one all about one of its ideas, a database language called SEQUEL, later dubbed SQL.
