IBM Merges System p and System i Server Lines
by Timothy Prickett Morgan

In what was probably one of the worst kept secrets so far in 2008, IBM announced this week at a Town Hall meeting at the COMMON user group conference and expo in Nashville, Tennessee, that it would finally and formally do away with the System p and System i server brands and change the name of the i5/OS operating system for what is very likely to be the last time. I said 'very likely' because this is Big Blue, after all. READ MORE >

IBM Launches Dual-Core Power6 JS12 Blade Server
by Timothy Prickett Morgan

As part of the consolidation of the Power-based System p and System i servers this week and the rebranding of the i5/OS operating system to simply i, or i for Business or IBM i 6.l if you can't stand a single letter product name, Big Blue did the smart thing and got a single-socket Power6 blade server, the JS12, out the door. This is a far more appropriate server for customers with more modest workloads than the four-core JS22 blade, launched last year, can handle. READ MORE >

Oracle's Business Grows in Fiscal Q3, But Not As Much as Expected
by Timothy Prickett Morgan

When you are the second largest provider of ERP software in the world, the leader in databases, and the contender for the leadership position in middleware, people watch how your business is going, particularly with so much talk about a potential or actual recession in the U.S. economy these days. And so it was as Oracle announced financial results for its fiscal 2008 third quarter last Wednesday and gave Wall Street a bit of a disappointment. READ MORE >

As I See It: Misera Plebs Contribuens
by Victor Rozek

Greetings, misera plebs contribuens!
