IBM Supports WebSphere Tools on HP-UX

Published: May 17, 2007

by Timothy Prickett Morgan

IBM and Hewlett-Packard might be fierce rivals in the server and services markets, but they have to cooperate in some areas. Some HP shops want to run IBM's software, and IBM certainly wants to sell it to them. Which is why a number of WebSphere products have been certified to run on HP-UX iron based on the Itanium processor from Intel.

This week, IBM announced two programs that offer user-customized portal access to enterprise applications and content management for collaborative Web-based applications, respectively, are now available on HP-UX on the Integrity server line. Specifically, the programs are WebSphere Portal V6.0 and Workplace Web Content Management V6.0, both of which were introduced last July on a number of platforms, including HP-UX running on HP 9000 servers (using HP's own PA-RISC processors). The software is available for this platform immediately, and will be available on various hard media on June 12.

While IBM does not have great love of the Itanium architecture, which with the dual-core "Montecito" Itanium 2 processors have helped HP stabilize its high-end server business somewhat and definitely remain competitive with the AIX-based Power5+ line of servers from Big Blue, the company has little choice but to support the Integrity machines. Customers on PA-RISC iron and using HP-UX are definitely going to move to Integrity machines--or some other server--and IBM can either move with them or be left behind. Since HP doesn't have a middleware product of its own, keeping its foot in the data center door with WebSphere and related products is a good strategy toward trying to replace HP-UX iron with AIX or Linux alternatives.

WebSphere Portal V6.0 runs on 32-bit X86 servers (and on X64 servers, which are backward compatible) as well as on IBM's Power-based machines (that's the System i and the System p as well as selected BladeCenter blades) and its System z mainframes. The software is also supported on Sparc-based platforms from Sun Microsystems and Fujitsu. Workplace Web Content Management V6.0 runs on the same iron. Windows, Linux, Unix (Solaris, AIX, and HP-UX), i5/OS, and z/OS operating systems are supported on their respective hardware platforms.
