IBM Launches First Power6-Based Server

The wait is finally over. Sort of. On Monday, at the Four Seasons Hotel in London, IBM finally rolled out its much-awaited Power6 processor and the very first machine to make use of it, a modified System p 570 server that formerly used Power5 and Power5+ chips. In London on Monday, IBM launched the first of what will be many System p and System i servers that will make use of its new dual-core Power6 processors. Hardware is only half of a system--and some would argue even less. Systems software is equally differentiating when it comes to servers these days. Initial Power6 Servers Show Respectable Performance Gains

When IBM began talking about the dual-core Power6 processors a little more than a year ago in public, it did not talk much about the performance that these chips, which include lots of integrated co-processors as well as Power execution cores. Earlier this year, when Big Blue was a little more comfortable that it could meet its chip yields and clock speeds using its 65 nanometer processes, the company's top brass felt confident enough to say that the initial Power6 chips would offer about twice the performance of the initial Power5 chips from early 2004. Virtualization, Consolidation Drive Server Sales in Q1

The massive churning in the server business continued apace in the first quarter, according to market statistics released by both IDC and Gartner. While neither company ever agrees down to the second significant digit when it comes to revenue market share in the server space, the analysts at IDC and Gartner agree that the virtualization of servers is driving the sale of more expensive boxes and server consolidation is pushing lots of new iron into data centers and, presumably, lots more older iron out.
