If you are looking for a dirt-cheap Unix server to rent with a shell account, it is hard to beat the deal that Tolerant Solutions has cooked up.
Tolerant, which appears to have a hop flower as its logo (which means they like beer, which means they are trustworthy as well as tolerant, which is no surprise since they are from Ontario, Canada), is offering slices of servers powered by BSD Unix and having full shell access, unlimited transfer bandwidth, space for a Web site, access via SSH, FTP, and IRC for a measly $3.95 (U.S.) per month.
Of course, having done a brief Web search, I discovered that EFNet Shells is offering accounts for $3 a month and $30 a year. And Super Dimension Fortress has been running a public access Unix system since 1987 and is offering free shell accounts to free software authors, teachers, students, and hobbyists.
