HP Donates the Guts of Tru64 Unix's File System to Linux
by Timothy Prickett Morgan

Say what you will about the makers of proprietary minicomputers from days gone by, but Digital, IBM, and Hewlett-Packard all knew a thing or two about making a tightly integrated, highly polished system. And in most cases, that expertise in VMS, OS/400, and MPE infused their respective owners' Unix development projects with a certain amount of finesse. The smarts that went into these proprietary and Unix platforms sure would come in handy as Linux tries to take on more and more of the enterprise. READ MORE >

Fujitsu Lands Monster Unix Deal with China Mobile
by Timothy Prickett Morgan

Being on the same side of the planet in a massive IT deal helps, and it often helps quite a lot. This is one reason that, for instance, IBM has historically had such a huge presence in Japan since the 1960s and the mainframe revolution. But Fujitsu, NEC, and Hitachi guard their relatively local Asian/Pacific markets pretty tightly, and it is hard to win a lot of deals. Such is the case with a monster contract that Fujitsu just won at China Mobile Communications. READ MORE >

Virtual Servers Keep On A Rollin', Thanks to uptime software
by Alex Woodie

A side effect of employing virtualization software to cram multiple virtual servers into a single physical server is a lack of visibility into what's happening inside those virtual environments, which can lead to downtime. This is creating an opportunity for a new class of systems monitoring and management software vendors to make names for themselves. One of those vendors, uptime software, recently updated its software to provide more sophisticated SLA and transaction monitoring, as well as support for IBM's PowerVM hypervisor. READ MORE >

As I See It: Flights of Fancy
by Victor Rozek

On December 7, 2005, the Air Force released its new mission statement: 'The Mission of the United States Air Force is to deliver sovereign options for the defense of the United States of America and its global interests--to fly and fight in air, space, and cyberspace.' Besides noting that the Air Force should expand its mission to include hiring an English major to fix that tortured bit of writing, it is worth observing that the Air Force has taken an active interest in cyberspace. The company, which is based in Boca Raton, Florida, has also deferred its annual meeting until the bankers at JPMorgan Chase finish up doing the financial analysis and laying out a strategy for the company.
