HP-UX 11i v3 Update 2 Pricing Revealed--Sort Of
by Timothy Prickett Morgan

Back in April, when I told you about Hewlett-Packard's delivery of Update 2 of the HP-UX 11i v3 operating system, I explained that HP had tweaked the way that elements of HP-UX and its related systems software for clustering and virtualization was bundled together. At the time, HP decided that it didn't want to give out pricing information for the operating system--a position I never like to see any IT vendor take with any product. Everything should have a list price, and these should be publicly available. READ MORE >

Gartner Revises HP's Server Sales Downward for Q1
by Timothy Prickett Morgan

Back in May, the analysts at Gartner put out statistics for the first quarter of 2008 for sales and shipments of servers of all kinds on a global basis. And there was much jubilation over at Hewlett-Packard, which Gartner said knocked out IBM as the top server seller globally in the quarter; HP has long-since been the top shipper. But beating Big Blue on its home systems turf is a big deal. READ MORE >

Sun Upgrades and Extends Thumper Array Lineup
by Timothy Prickett Morgan

Nearly two years ago, Sun Microsystems and its recently reacquired chief technology officer and co-founder, Andy Bechtolsheim, launched what they had hoped would be a new kind of hybrid product called a data server as part of the delivery of its initial 'Galaxy' class of X64-based servers. The first product, code-named 'Thumper' and sold as the X4500 Data Server, has had success in niche markets thus far, and Sun is hoping to do better with an expanded Thumper line launched this week. As I See It: The Digital Leader
by Victor Rozek

Remote management, like remote viewing, is a specialized skill with a small practitioner base and an even smaller number of players who can actually do it successfully. Leading a tightly knit group of people, all of whom work in the same facility--and with whom you can directly interact--is one thing. Leading groups in a distributed world, where people are separated by continents and cultures, and with whom you have no personal contact, is quite another. And although management schools and how-to theories abound, there is really no place to learn the complexities of managing people who aren't there. So what's an aspiring leader to do? by Timothy Prickett Morgan

Here we are halfway through 2008, and only now is IDC coming out with its sales statistics for the relational database management system (RDBMS) market in 2007. But estimating database sales takes a whole lot more effort than counting up servers and calculating revenues by vendor, and it takes both IDC and Gartner to gin up statistics that they think accurately reflect what actually happened in the market. Hence, the lag. READ MORE >
