Sun Fleshes Out Galaxy Opteron Server Line

It has probably taken a lot longer than Sun Microsystems would have liked, but the company this week finally took the wraps off the next iterations of its "Galaxy" class of Opteron-based servers. With the announcements this week at its Network Computing event in San Francisco, Sun launched a 16-core SMP server, a 10-blade server with an interesting architectural approach, and something that Sun is calling a data server. IBM's High-End Power5+ Launch Set for July 25

Rather than try to steal the show and make its Power5+ server announcements on the same day that Intel is expected to roll out the much-awaited "Montecito" dual-core Itanium processors, IBM is shooting for the last word at the high-end of the market and is launching its biggest Power5+ Unix-based servers on July 25. HP Bolsters Virtual Server Environment for HP-UX

Every summer or so for the past several years, Hewlett-Packard makes some announcements that enhance the virtualization features that are associated with its HP-UX Unix environment. This summer is no different, and HP has tweaked the Virtual Server Environment for HP-UX 11i, making it more malleable. The company is also delivering a VSE reference architecture to make it easier for companies to deploy Oracle Real Application Clusters within the vPar and nPar partitions on Itanium-based Integrity servers. Fabric7 Tweaks Opteron Servers, Adds Windows and Solaris Support

Upstart Silicon Valley server maker Fabric7 Systems this week is, like Sun Microsystems, trying to push the Opteron envelope a little further. As promised, Fabric7 this week is announcing support of Microsoft's Windows operating system in its Q80, which it had promised to do last year when it launched the machines running Linux.
