Sun Polishes Up Sparc T2 Multithreaded Chips
by Timothy Prickett Morgan

A cynic might suggest that Sun Microsystems broke its Microelectronics chip division free of its Systems group in late March just so it could get twice as many Sparc-related press releases to market. Otherwise, Sun would not be launching the "Niagara-2" Sparc T2 chip this week as a separate product, but would have to wait until its next generation of servers was ready for market some time before the end of this year and then talk about the chip as a component of the overall machine. AMD Gooses Dual-Core Opteron Speeds, Cuts Prices
by Timothy Prickett Morgan

Chip maker Advanced Micro Devices this week made good on its promise to increase the clock speed on its dual-core Opteron Rev F processors for servers and workstations, which it said it would do back in April when it last increased clock speeds on the parts. The company also slashed prices on its first-generation Rev E chips (which had one core per chip) and second-generation Rev F Opteron processors in an effort to make life a little more difficult for rival Intel. Sun Creates Virtual Tape Library from Thumper Server
by Timothy Prickett Morgan

Last week, when the top brass at Sun Microsystems was going over its financial results for fiscal 2007 ended in June, the company had hinted that it was in the midst of a major transition in its storage product lineup that would see it emphasize designs similar to the "Thumper" X4500 storage server and less like legacy Sun and StorageTek products. This week, Sun has announced a spin-off of the Thumper server, a virtual tape library called the VTL Value, to distinguish it from more expensive StorageTek VTLs. READ MORE >

As I See It: Policeware
by Victor Rozek

Is it just me or is the Federal Bureau of Investigation running out of clever names for its clever software? I mean, first we had Carnivore, which conjures up something toothy and predatory; then we had Magic Lantern, which evokes mystical, Harry Potteresque powers; and now we have CIPAV, which sounds like, well, like it was written by IBM.
