OpenDarwin Shuts Down as Apple Opens Up Mac OS Forge
by Timothy Prickett Morgan

If I could make a set of broad generalizations, I would say that companies that have a heritage in closed source operating systems seem to have the hardest time fully embracing the concept of truly open source, community developed software; they also seem to be very much eager to enjoy the benefits of the open source development community at large and to figure out ways of commercializing the software stacks they develop. So it is with Apple Computer and its Mac OS operating system. READ MORE >

Can Apple Finally Break Into the Big Time with Core Xserves?
by Timothy Prickett Morgan

While Apple Computer has never been a big player in the server racket, it has in recent years, thanks to the Unix-derived Mac OS X and some very powerful Power-based Xserve machines, been able to win some high-profile accounts (particularly in supercomputing) and satisfy the departmental serving needs of its legions of Mac enthusiasts. The question now, as Apple has this week completed its transition from Power processors to Intel's Core X64 processors in its laptop, desktop, and server machines, is whether or not Apple can extend beyond and actually grow its server business. Infor Closes SSA Buy and Acquires Remaining GEAC Bits
by Timothy Prickett Morgan

Midrange ERP powerhouse Infor announced last week that it had finalized its acquisition of rival software maker and similarly venture-capital backed SSA Global, and said further that it had acquired Extensity, the piece of Canadian ERP software supplier GEAC that was not originally acquired back in November 2005 when Infor started to bulk up in a big way.
