HP, Intel, and Oracle Gang Up on IBM Mainframes

As part of the festivities at the Oracle OpenWorld customer event in San Francisco this week, Hewlett-Packard announced that it was teaming up with chip maker Intel and Oracle, which has the most popular relational database on Unix servers and which also has middleware and many different application software suites, to try to persuade IBM mainframe shops that it is now time to move to new architectures and new applications. Sun Talks Up Niagara-2 Sparcs, Begins Work on Niagara-3

Server maker Sun Microsystems might be gung-ho for Advanced Micro Devices's Opteron X64 processors, but it still believes that it can offer differentiation and value in its own Sparc processor line. Dell Launches Its First Opteron-Based Servers

Server and PC maker Dell, smarting from market share declines and competitive pressures among other problems, started to rectify its position in the server market this week by launching its first two Opteron-based PowerEdge servers. Back in May, after a downturn in its financial results, Dell said that it would stop its Intel-exclusive strategy, and this week Dell and alternate chip partner Advanced Micro Devices chose the Oracle OpenWorld event in San Francisco as the stage on which to launch the machines.
