Lakeview Launches MIMIX for AIX

Lakeview Technology this week announced MIMIX for AIX, a high availability clustering and disaster recovery product designed to protect applications and data housed in IBM's Unix operating system.

The MIMIX for AIX family includes two products, including MIMIX EchoStream, which provides continuous data protection (CDP) capabilities, and MIMIX HA Cluster, which provides high availability and clustering capabilities. The software is based in part on technology Lakeview obtained with its acquisition of H.A. Technical Solutions three years ago.

With MIMIX EchoStream, changes to AIX data are constantly logged, and users can recover data from lost or corrupted documents or databases with the push of a button. MIMIX for AIX implements what's known as "true" CDP, which means it can recover data from any point in time, as opposed to "near" CDP, which take snapshots of data at regular intervals.

With MIMIX HA Cluster, users gain a form of clustering that replicates data from AIX environments to secondary machines. It also provides "heartbeat monitoring" and a way to fail over to the secondary machine during an unexpected outage or during a period of planned downtime.

Ed Vesely, Lakeview's vice president of worldwide marketing, predicts the new product will be readily adopted by AIX users. "MIMIX revolutionizes the data recovery and high availability landscape for System p customers by delivering any-point-in-time data recovery as a stand-alone solution or as part of an affordable, easily installed and configured high availability clustering solution," he says.

Prior to MIMX for AIX, users had few good choices when it came to high availability or CDP solutions, Lakeview says. Most of the solutions in the market relied on "complex" clustering solutions that often required data to be re-keyed into the system or data to be restored from slow-running tape drives.

The software will work with AIX running on IBM System p servers, or any RISC machine loaded with AIX, including iSeries and System i servers.

Lakeview also offers high availability or disaster recovery tools for OS/400-i5/OS, Windows, and Linux servers, including MIMIX HA for i5/OS, MIMIX ha1 for Linux, and MIMIX ha1 for Windows.
