EU Opens Fresh Antitrust Investigation of Microsoft

Microsoft is likely to be feeling a strong case of déjà vu this week following an announcement by the European Commission that it's opened two new investigations against the company. The regulator's first investigation will see whether the company failed to supply interoperability information for the Office suite, server products, the .NET Framework, and its new Open XML format, while the second probe will look into potentially illegal product bundling with Windows, including Internet Explorer (again), its desktop search offering, and Windows Live. Microsoft Rises to Sixth on Patent List for 2007

Microsoft was awarded more than 1,600 patents by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) in 2007, placing it sixth on the list of biggest patent performers, according to IFI Patent Intelligence, which tracks patent awards. IBM, which tried but failed to patent outsourcing last year, won the patent count for the 16th straight year, with more than 3,100 patents. READ MORE >

Top Executive Raikes to Retire from Microsoft

Bill Gates won't be the only prominent executive to leave Microsoft this year. Last week, the company announced that Jeff Raikes, president of the Microsoft Business Division, will take his retirement this September following a 27-year career at the software giant. A former Juniper Networks executive will be brought in to replace Raikes. At the same time, Bob Muglia, head of the Server and Tools Group, will start reporting directly to CEO Steve Ballmer.
