Microsoft has hired Donald Ferguson, IBM's top WebSphere guru and the chief architect for IBM's Software Group, the software giant revealed last week.
Ferguson held several high-profile jobs at IBM before accepting a job at Microsoft. These include being the original chief architect for the WebSphere family of products, and, later, the chief architect for IBM Software Group and chairman of the group's architecture board, which oversees the integration of WebSphere, DB2, Lotus, Tivoli, and Rational products. He was one of 53 IBM fellows, the highest technical position at IBM.
Ferguson is keeping the title of fellow at Microsoft. Specifically, he has taken the position of technical fellow in platforms and strategy, and will work in the office of the chief technical officer (CTO). Microsoft's Web site lists David Vaskevitch as the CTO.
Ferguson's job will be "understanding the trends, architecting and piloting the implications for existing and new products, and evangelizing Microsoft's vision," according to Microsoft. He will also "focus on the evolutionary and revolutionary role of information technology in business," his Web site bio says.
Microsoft currently employs 15 technical fellows. The technical fellow position is commensurate to that of corporate vice president, the company says. Of the 15, six had worked previously at DEC, four at IBM, two at Xerox PARC, and one each at Cray, Tandem, Banyan Systems, Borland, Winternals, Denelcor, Yahoo! Research, AT&T, Digital Systems, ROLM, and SIR International.
