Microsoft will spend $550 million to build a new data center in San Antonio, Texas, the software giant announced last month.
The 400,000-square-foot facility, the company's first data center in Texas, will house hundreds of servers that will host Web-based offerings from Microsoft, such as its Windows Live offerings.
Once the building is completed, in 1.5 to two years, 75 full-time employees will staff the site. Microsoft will get tax benefits from the city to the tune of about $5 million for creating the jobs.
Not to be outdone, search giant Google is building a data center of its own in Lenoir, North Carolina, that could cost as much as $600 million and employ as many as 210 people within four years.
